What is PPE?

PPE is an acronym for ‘Personal Protective Equipment’ and is essentially the pieces of equipment worn by staff to keep them as safe as possible in their work place and provide them with a protective means from hazards that are common in their workplace.

PPE takes various forms. These include:

  • Eye protection
  • Head protection
  • Lung protection
  • Ear protection
  • Knee protection
  • High-visibility wear
  • Working at height equipment
  • Thermal workwear
  • Hand protection

And more…

As we have progressed as workers and employees, it has come to light over the years that certain jobs can prove to be a high-risk for health problems and this can be slowed-down significantly, and even completely avoided, with PPE.

After all, most people do not want to suffer health problems as a result of their working life.

Why is PPE important?

There are various reasons why PPE is important. Even in work locations that have put in reinforced controlled measures to eliminate any dangers, there may still be hazards that can have a dramatic effect when they cause a problem for workers.

PPE can protect workers against:

  • The lungs (due to air contamination)
  • Head and feet (falling materials)
  • Eyes (dust, falling materials, particles and liquids)
  • Skin (corrosive materials and burns)
  • Body (slips, trips, falls, heat, cold temperatures)

Check out our blog on the importance of PPE for more information about why it is important to wear PPE.

When should I use PPE?

PPE should be worn at all times when on site, after all, an accident can happen at any point and won’t just occur conveniently when you are wearing PPE.

What’s more, if you are wearing PPE to avoid coming into contact with a build-up of harmful products, then it is highly important to always wear your PPE.
